This year marks 145 years of Highland BlindCraft!

We started life in 1881 as a school for blind children, and over time grew into what we are today – a social enterprise focused on creating meaningful employment and handcrafted beds made right here in the Highlands.

A lot has changed over the years, but if you walked into our workshop today, you’d still recognise the same care and skill that’s always been part of what we do.

What really makes Highland BlindCraft though is our people. Many of our team have been with us for decades building careers and progressing within the organisation. We’re also lucky to have customers who come back to us time and time again for first beds to later-life comfort.

Alongside our beds and mattresses, we also deliver sensory services across the Highlands and Western Isles. Every bed we make helps support that work, from creating local jobs to helping people live more independently following sight loss.

Reaching 145 years has given us a chance to reflect, but also to look ahead. We’re already thinking about what 150 years might look like, while staying focused on what matters most – our team and a great night's sleep!

The journey of a Highland BlindCraft mattress

When people think about buying a new mattress, they often picture the moment it arrives in the bedroom. Fresh sheets, a comfortable night’s sleep, and hopefully waking up feeling refreshed. But before that mattress ever reaches a customer’s home, there is quite a journey behind the scenes. At Highland BlindCraft, every mattress begins its life in our workshop in Inverness, where our team carefully build each bed layer by layer.

Behind the scenes

Tucked away in the Crown residential area of Inverness, our workshop might look like an unassuming building from the outside. Inside, however, is a small hidden gem in the Highlands where mattresses are crafted and prepared for homes across the region and beyond. Here you will find rolls of fabric waiting to be cut, springs being assembled and layers of fillings prepared ready for the next stage of construction. There is often the quiet hum of machinery, the sound of tools and the steady rhythm of skilled hands at work.

There are many steps in between that people probably never see - Mattresses are carefully assembled, fillings are secured through tufting and beds can be measured and made to size depending on the customer’s needs. Each layer plays its part, from supportive springs to breathable materials designed to help create a comfortable sleeping environment. For the team in the workshop, there is a real sense of pride in seeing a mattress come together from the first layer to the finished product.

From the workshop to the showroom

Once complete, mattresses make their way into our showroom where customers can see and try them for themselves. This is often where the biggest surprises happen. Many people arrive convinced they want one particular type of mattress, only to discover that something completely different feels more comfortable once they lie down. It is also where customers can begin to build their complete bed. Alongside choosing a mattress, many people select a base and headboard, with options available in a range of fabrics so the finished bed suits both comfort and style. Being able to see the options, feel the materials and talk things through with the team can make the whole process feel much simpler.

The final step. Delivery

For many customers, this is the moment when everything comes together. The new bed arrives, the room is set up, and the mattress is ready to be enjoyed from the very first night. Unlike mattresses that are compressed into boxes, our mattresses are delivered ready to sleep on, allowing the materials and construction to remain exactly as intended. Many customers tell us that the whole process is much easier than they expected.

Behind every mattress is a team of people who take pride in the work they do. From the workshop to the showroom and out on delivery, there are many hands involved in ensuring each mattress reaches its new home.

Why Mattress Materials Matter More Than Marketing

When choosing a mattress, it’s easy to be influenced by marketing. Words like luxury, premium, or orthopaedic often appear in advertising, but they don’t always explain what the mattress is actually made from.

In reality, what matters most is what’s inside the mattress.

The materials used in a mattress play a significant role in how it feels, how well it supports the body, and how long it will last. Two mattresses may look very similar from the outside, but the fillings, fibres and spring systems inside can make a noticeable difference to comfort and durability. In the mattress industry it’s common to see claims such as “the best mattress on the market” or “guaranteed perfect sleep”. While those statements sound reassuring, the truth is that comfort is deeply personal. What works wonderfully for one person may not suit someone else at all. That’s why we believe it’s helpful to focus on explainin what’s inside rather than relying on big p romises.

Understanding what goes inside a mattress

This is something we think about carefully when designing our own mattresses. For example, our Eco Mattress was developed with a focus on transparency using materials we can trace and understand. It features a natural cotton topping layer and traceable coconut hessian - materials chosen for their durability, breathability and natural properties. As more people become aware of the long-term impact of synthetic or “forever” materials, many customers are beginning to ask more questions about what goes into the products they use every day. Being able to source materials responsibly and have greater control over what goes into a mattress allows us to provide a clearer answer to those questions. The structure of a mattress is just as important as the fillings. Spring systems play a key role in how support is distributed across the body. For example, pocket springs work independently, allowing the mattress to respond to different pressure points and movements. This can provide more tailored support and can also reduce the amount of movement felt when sharing a bed with a partner. By comparison, open coil spring systems use a connected wire structure. While they still provide comfort they tend to move as one unit, which may transfer movement across the mattress more easily. Neither system is inherently “right” or “wrong”, but understanding the difference can help people choose what suits their needs best.

Mattresses in a box

In recent years, mattresses that arrive rolled up in a box have become increasingly popular. For some people, especially when working within a tight budget, they can appear to be a convenient and affordable option. We understand that cost is an important consideration for many households, and these products can seem like a great deal at first glance. However, it’s worth thinking about the long-term performance of a mattress as well as the initial price. Many mattresses that are compressed and rolled for shipping rely heavily on foam layers to allow them to be packed into a box. While this makes transportation easier, the construction and materials can sometimes limit how well the mattress holds its shape and support over time.

At Highland BlindCraft, our mattresses are made and delivered ready to sleep on. They are not rolled or compressed, allowing the materials, springs and fillings to sit naturally as intended. For us, the focus is on building mattresses that provide consistent support and comfort over many years rather than being designed primarily for packaging and transport.

A question we often hear in the showroom

One of the questions we’re regularly asked in our showroom is whether a mattress can be flipped. In most cases, the answer is yes. With the exception of memory foam mattresses, the majority of our mattresses can be flipped and rotated. Doing this helps the fillings settle more evenly and can extend the life of the mattress. Regular turning and rotating allows the mattress to wear more evenly over time, helping maintain support and comfort for longer. It’s a small step that can make a noticeable difference in how well a mattress performs over the years.

Looking beyond the surface

A mattress might look similar on the outside, but the materials and construction inside will influence how it performs night after night. At Highland BlindCraft, we believe that understanding how a mattress is made is just as important as how it feels in the showroom. Taking the time to explain the materials, the spring systems and the craftsmanship behind each mattress helps people make a more informed decision about something they rely on every single night.

Understanding how sleep habits, support and experience all help shape a better night’s rest.

We all know the feeling of a bad night’s sleep. You wake up tired, your mood is lower, and even the smallest tasks can feel more difficult. Sleep affects everything from how we feel physically to how we function mentally throughout the day, yet many people assume there is a simple formula for getting it right.

In reality, sleep is far more personal than people realise. There is no such thing as a “perfect” mattress or sleep routine that works for everyone. Our bodies, lifestyles, and environments are all different, which means the conditions that help one person sleep well may not work for another. After speaking with thousands of customers over the years, one thing becomes very clear - no two people sleep in exactly the same way.

For example, body shape and sleeping position can influence what feels most comfortable. Someone who sleeps mostly on their side may prefer a mattress that allows their shoulders and hips to sink slightly, while someone who sleeps on their back might feel better supported with a different level of firmness to help keep the spine aligned.

Your environment also plays an important role. Temperature, lighting, and noise can all affect how easily we fall asleep and how well we stay asleep throughout the night. Even the people we share our bed or bedroom with can influence our rest. A partner who snores, moves a lot during the night, or prefers a different level of firmness can make finding the right balance a little more complicated.

Daily routines can also have an impact. Busy schedules, stress, shift work, or spending time on phones and screens late in the evening can all influence how easily we switch off at night.

This is why choosing a mattress isn’t simply about picking the most popular option or following general advice. Many people assume a very firm mattress is always the answer to back pain, but that isn’t necessarily the case. Often a mattress that provides balanced support while allowing the body to rest naturally can make a significant difference.

Small changes can make a difference

Improving sleep doesn’t always require a dramatic change. Sometimes small adjustments can have a noticeable impact.

For couples who share a bed but have different comfort preferences, options such as zip and link mattresses can offer a practical solution. These allow each person to choose a mattress tension that suits them best while still sharing the same bed frame.

Befriending Week

It’s Befriending Week, so there’s no better time to celebrate our small but dedicated team of volunteers who play a huge part in helping us offer this to our service users.

Since launching our befriending project earlier this year, we’ve been able to offer support to service users who require this help through regular phone calls or, in some cases, in-person visits.

The feedback we’ve had has been incredible! Here’s what some of our service users have said:

“This is a wonderful service and as a family, one we are truly grateful for. A huge thank you to our befriender and the organisation behind it.”

“It gives me something to look forward to. Just being able to speak to someone regularly really helps. It can be a bit lonely at times, but our conversations always help cheer me up.”

It’s not just our service users who benefit. Our volunteers get just as much out of it. Here are some of the things they’ve said:

“Personally, I feel that I have got a great deal from the experience. It gives me a clearer appreciation of the challenges this service user faces daily. More importantly, I have made a friend, and I look forward to every meeting we have together.”

Big Deal Secured for Highland BlindCraft Beds

Highland Blindcraft lands major deal to supply mattresses to Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) for workers village near Fort Augustus!

We’re excited to share some fantastic news - Highland BlindCraft has secured a major contract to supply high-quality, handcrafted mattresses for Balfour Beatty’s Glen Mor workers’ village near Fort Augustus. This accommodation will house the skilled workforce delivering SSEN Transmission’s Skye Reinforcement Project, which will replace the overhead electricity transmission line between Fort Augustus and Skye.

Our first delivery of 85 mattresses is scheduled for this month, with the potential for further orders in the months ahead. Each mattress is carefully made in our Inverness workshop, combining craftsmanship, comfort, and social purpose.

Highland BlindCraft has been proudly serving Scotland for over 140 years, providing supported employment and skills training for individuals with disabilities and visual impairments. This latest project is a perfect example of how our work not only delivers comfort but also creates opportunities for people in our community.

Thanks to this contract, we’ve been able to create a new manufacturing role, part-funded by Highland Council through the Highland Employment Recruitment Offer (HERO) scheme — supporting local jobs while meeting the needs of a major infrastructure project.

We’re also committed to making this collaboration as sustainable as possible. Mattress covers will be replaced when a worker leaves the accommodation, ensuring hygiene and quality without unnecessary waste. At the end of the project, the mattresses will be fully refurbished and donated to local charities - giving them a second life and helping those in need.

This contract is part of a wider effort by SSEN Transmission and Balfour Beatty to work closely with local businesses and deliver long-term social value.

“Supporting local businesses and delivering social value is a key aim of this project… it provides a great example of what can be achieved when organisations work in partnership to deliver real impact that supports livelihoods and benefits local communities.”

Our CEO, Deirdre Aitken , shared how proud the team is to be involved:

The Skye Reinforcement Project will replace the existing single-circuit overhead line between Fort Augustus and Skye, which is nearing the end of its operational life. The upgrade will:

Maintain energy security for homes and businesses in Skye, along the route, and in the Western Isles.
Increase capacity to allow more renewable energy to connect to the grid.
Strengthen network reliability for the future.

We’re incredibly proud that our small Inverness-based team is playing a part in such a significant project for the Highlands and Islands - delivering comfort, sustainability, and a great night's sleep... one mattress at a time.

Collaboration with Highland Coast Hotels’

World Tourism Day (Friday 27th September 2024).

Visitors to the world-famous North Coast 500 (NC500) can now tuck themselves into the ‘best night’s sleep’ this autumn and winter thanks to a new partnership between Highland Coast Hotels and local social enterprise, Highland BlindCraft Beds, being launched today – World Tourism Day (Friday 27th September 2024).

The Scottish-based hotel group is now working with Inverness-based Highland BlindCraft to install over 220 handcrafted beds, mattresses and headboards across all its landmark venues around the north Highlands.

Founded in 1881, Highland BlindCraft is a renowned manufacturer and retailer of high-quality bed products.

All items are handmade in its factory by skilled craftspeople each living with a disability.

As a charity and successful, ethical business, Highland BlindCraft is the only organisation of its kind in the Scottish Highlands.

The firm has provided training and employment opportunities to individuals living with visual impairments and other disabilities across the Highlands for over 140 years.

Highland BlindCraft’s products are fully customisable with a choice of sizes, fabrics, fillings and firmness, all helping to create the best night’s sleep for weary travellers at six of Highland Coast Hotels’ venues around the NC500.

Deirdre Aitken, CEO of Highland BlindCraft, said:

“We’re delighted to provide Highland Coast Hotels with beds, mattresses and headboards for properties across the group – ensuring every guest has the best night’s sleep imaginable, set against a backdrop of Scotland’s most beautiful scenery.

Originally set up to help blind Highland residents, Highland BlindCraft is proud to open its doors to anyone willing to work. Paid jobs and training are given to people with a wide range of disabilities, not just those with visual and auditory impairments.

We are so proud to have been around for so long

We are so proud to have been around for so long, helping people through the generations with disability issues – providing education, training, support and employment to the people of Inverness, the Highlands and Islands.

As for the future, we are focused on our mission to keep on helping our people and the people of the wider community by managing a sustainable and profitable charity business, producing and selling stunning products for generations to come.

The deprivation of sight is no disqualification for a life of ordinary usefulness nor has it stood in the way of pre-eminent success in almost every department of human labour.

Highland BlindCraft’s roots lie in teaching the blind with the belief that if someone has the willingness to work, then paid employment should be an option for all people including those who suffer from a disability. When the factory was established, their employees were given the same rights and conditions as able-bodied people in the workplace and would not be further disadvantaged – and the factory is still run on the same principle today.

1881

Established 24th March 1881, a home was set up on Ardconnel Street, Inverness which provided education and employment opportunities to blind and visually impaired individuals in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. The home accommodated 18 blind scholars for an annual payment of £10 – including education.

Pupils who resided in the House were aged 8-16 years old, and besides ordinary education were taught industrial employment skills in preparation for working life. Boys were taught the art of basket weaving, while girls were taught sewing skills. It was not until the early 1900s that BlindCraft progressed into the bed-making industry, and a new shop was built on Castle Street, Inverness.

1918 saw BlindCraft opened the doors to their current factory at 39 Ardconnel Street, Inverness and later added the shop. The factory has been extended and modernized over the years and is home to the design, manufacturing and production of high-quality products handmade by locally employed individuals.

Today Highland BlindCraft is still run with the same concept, although now we provide opportunities to individuals with a variety of disabilities. Even though BlindCraft is no longer a school we continue to provide development and training opportunities to all our team members should they wish to partake. Much of the training, such as I.T. Skills, Numeracy, and Literacy Training, is provided with the aim of developing knowledge and confidence in the hope that one day the participant can progress into unsupported employment.

Since the factory’s beginning, we have developed our product and service range from basket weaving, to bed and mattress manufacturing. Continuing to develop our product range to include; headboards, divan bed bases, footstools, ottomans and much more, all handmade in our Inverness factory.

Exciting New Projects and Award Nominations

Highland BlindCraft is thrilled to announce the launch of two innovative projects aimed at enhancing community well-being and sustainability.

The first project/product, an Eco Mattress, reflects the organisation’s commitment to eco-friendly solutions by using sustainable materials in mattress production. This project not only supports environmental conservation but also provides customers with high-quality, ethically-made products.

The second major project is the Highland BlindCraft SensoryServices Drop-In Centre, a dedicated space to support individuals with low vision/visual impairments. This new facility offers a welcoming environment where visitors can access tailored hearing and sight services alongside support from their friendly and knowledgeable team.

In addition to these projects, Highland BlindCraft has been recognised for its outstanding contributions with several award nominations. The organisation is a finalist in the Prosper/Highlands and Islands Business Excellence Awards for Logan Air Award for Excellence in Customer Service and the Highland Council Award for Purposeful Business. Highland BlindCraft is also nominated for Employer of the Year at the Highland Business Awards by the Inverness Chamber of Commerce.

These achievements reflect the organisation’s dedication to customer care, social purpose, and fostering an inclusive work environment.

Meet Deirdre Aitken

Deirdre Aitken, Appointed CEO - Highland Blindcraft.

This is a social enterprise making beds, mattresses, headboards and more while supporting disabled people in employment. We are developing the “services” for people with sight loss so that we are a fully inclusive service and business for those people in the highlands, with sight loss, hearing loss and other disabilities.

I took up the role of interim CEO in December 2023 and then became permanent in June 2024. It is a challenging post with lots to learn but there is a great Team here that works together to deliver what the customers and service providers want. By providing supported employment people with sight loss, hearing loss and other disabilities are able to work in a supportive and encouraging environment where they gain confidence, experience and skills that can help them in their everyday lives.

The services provided are the people who need some help, advice or information on living with sight loss and related conditions, With the demonstration of specialist aids and equipment we want people to live independent and confident lives, which is what everyone wants.

Personally, I have been married to Robin for 35 years, not sure who deserves the medal! I have 3 grown-up children that I am very proud of and 2 gorgeous grandchildren. I am from Wick, having been brought up there since the age of 5, I was born in Nigeria when my Dad was teaching there.

After Leaving school, I worked in various admin roles before taking up the post of Co-ordinator of Caithness Deaf Care in 2001 and then developing that service to Hearing and Sight Care when I became Manager before taking up the role of Manager at Signt Action Sensory Services and then Highland Blindcraft, and Highland Blindcraft Sensory services.
